Funding Boosts Laval’s Resilience: New Stormwater System Receives Government Support

Federal and Provincial Investment to Address Sewer Backup Issues

LAVAL, QUE. – The City of Laval, Quebec, is set to benefit from a substantial investment of $24.5 million in joint funding from the federal government and the Province of Quebec. The funds will be allocated towards the development of a new stormwater network in an effort to mitigate recurring sewer backups in the Monty and Cyrano street areas.

The project’s primary objective is to enhance Laval’s infrastructure to effectively manage stormwater, particularly during extreme weather events associated with climate change. By separating the existing sewer networks and introducing additional storm pipes, the new system aims to alleviate the strain on the city’s infrastructure, reducing the risk of sewer backups and associated damages.

In addition to the physical improvements, the funding will also support the implementation of advanced rainwater treatment measures, further safeguarding the environment and promoting sustainable practices within the region.

Both the Government of Canada and the Government of Quebec are equally contributing $12,264,000 towards the initiative, demonstrating their commitment to collaborative efforts in addressing climate change and enhancing community resilience. The City of Laval is also making a significant financial contribution of $6,132,000 to support the project.

Mayor of Laval, Stephane Boyer, expressed enthusiasm for the initiative, emphasizing the importance of collective responsibility in adapting to the challenges posed by climate change. In the statement, the Mayor offered, “This announcement is an example of the importance of the dialogue initiated on sharing the economic burden related to the adaptation needs of our infrastructures due to climate change. On the ground, we will be able to start large-scale work for the implementation of lasting and adapted solutions that will ultimately offer a better quality of life to citizens who live in this sector while, at the same time, contributing to the protection of the environment.”

The investment in the new stormwater system represents a significant step towards strengthening Laval’s infrastructure, increasing the city’s capacity to handle stormwater, and ensuring the well-being of its residents. By proactively addressing the challenges associated with climate change, Laval is positioning itself as a leader in sustainable urban development and environmental protection.

Construction work on the project is expected to commence in the near future, bringing about tangible improvements to the Monty and Cyrano street areas and setting a precedent for other municipalities grappling with similar infrastructure challenges. Through collaboration and strategic investment, Laval is demonstrating its commitment to creating a resilient and sustainable future for its residents, while also contributing to the broader efforts of mitigating the impacts of climate change.
