Overnight fire in Sainte-Dorothée leaves eight residents displaced
A fire in the early hours of November 4 severely damaged two adjoining residential buildings on Lauzon Street in Sainte-Dorothée, displacing eight occupants. Laval firefighters received the call around 12:22 a.m. and dispatched nine units, totalling 34 personnel, to fight the flames.
The blaze ignited on a rear balcony of one building before spreading into the first floor, climbing to the second level, and ultimately engulfing the roof. Structural damage is estimated at approximately $400,000, with an additional $30,000 in loss of contents, bringing total damages to around $430,000.
The origin of the fire remains under investigation. In the wake of the incident, inspectors from the Service de sécurité incendie de Laval will be conducting neighbourhood door-to-door visits to remind residents to test their smoke alarms regularly.
In detail
STL plans transit network redesign as western residents speak up
The Société de transport de Laval is pushing forward with public consultations ahead of a comprehensive bus network redesign planned for 2028. On October 26, around thirty residents from Sainte-Rose, Fabreville, Laval-Ouest, Sainte-Dorothée, and Chomedey gathered for a workshop at Centre Accès on Arthur-Sauvé Boulevard.
Participants emphasized the need for faster, more direct routes, express services, and better east-west as well as north-south transit connections. They also stressed the necessity of seamless links to key regional transit hubs—such as the REM, the Montreal metro, and commuter train stations—and commercial or institutional destinations including the hospital, Centre de la nature, Centropolis, and Carrefour Laval.
The transit authority points out that the current bus network layout dates back to the opening of Laval’s metro stations in 2007. Additional public sessions are planned, and an online questionnaire remains open to the public.
Federal budget 2026 faces heavy scrutiny
Mark Carney’s government tables its second federal budget today, framed as a structural effort to shift Canada’s economic growth path. Entitled “Maîtres chez nous,” the plan focuses on boosting domestic productivity, drawing private investment, and curbing economic reliance on the American market.
Market analysts anticipate substantial deficits as Ottawa continues borrowing to support industries hit by trade tariffs. The Parliamentary Budget Officer projects that debt servicing will represent the fastest-rising federal expense category.
Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne indicated the fiscal plan includes steps to eliminate tax hurdles for small and medium-sized businesses. A major productivity deduction introduced in September will carry a cost of $36 billion over five years.
Quebec legislative sitting postponed to December 1
The PQ government has confirmed that the National Assembly will not reconvene until December 1, marking a two-week delay from the original schedule. MNAs will sit for just two weeks prior to the holiday break, wrapping up on December 11.
Government officials justified the revised calendar by citing Premier Paul St-Pierre Plamondon’s participation in the Francophonie Summit in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, from November 14 to 16, alongside the preparation of Finance Minister Nicolas Marceau’s economic and fiscal update.
The Liberal opposition denounced the postponement, arguing that pressing files are languishing. The PQ administration also aims to hold the opening of the session without Lieutenant Governor Manon Jeannotte, whom it regards as a colonial symbol. However, National Assembly rules mandate her attendance and can only be amended with the unanimous consent of all elected members.
Coup de Coeur
The STL’s community-first consultation process for its upcoming transit overhaul is a great example of meaningful civic engagement. By listening directly to west Laval commuters, the agency helps ensure long-term transit decisions genuinely reflect daily reality. It is a collaborative approach that deserves applause.
Before you go
Here is hoping your day runs smoothly, without delays or unexpected detours. May your commute be clear, your coffee stay warm, and your schedule leave room to catch a breath between updates. Have a great day, Laval. See you tomorrow. ☕
