Lead story

Albertans vote decisively to stay in Canada

Albertans have delivered an unmistakable verdict on their place in the federation. Preliminary numbers from Monday’s vote show over three-quarters of ballots cast favoured remaining part of Canada, firmly shutting the door on holding a future binding referendum on separation.

Premier Danielle Smith welcomed the outcome, noting in a statement on Monday evening that voters chose to build a stronger Alberta within a united country.

Prime Minister Mark Carney, who campaigned at pro-Canada events across the province last week, expressed relief and satisfaction with the result.

Final reporting took longer than anticipated after roughly 100 polling stations opened late on voting day.

In detail

Superior Court upholds union recognition at Laval Amazon facility

The Quebec Superior Court has dismissed Amazon’s challenge to a decision by the Administrative Labour Tribunal (TAT) concerning the unionization of employees at its former Laval warehouse. The CSN-affiliated union had obtained certification in May 2024 through the card-signing mechanism.

Amazon argued that this process infringed on freedom of association and also challenged the procedural fairness of the hearing before the TAT. The company claimed in particular that it had not had the opportunity to fully present its arguments on its standing in the case.

In her ruling, Justice Catherine Piché concludes that Amazon was heard adequately and that no violation of its right to be heard was demonstrated. This decision upholds the TAT’s findings and represents another victory for the union, despite the closure of the Laval warehouse since Amazon announced it was withdrawing its logistics operations in Quebec.

Weekend roof fire displaces three Duvernay residents

A Sunday morning fire caused significant structural damage to a single-family residence on Franchère Street in Duvernay. A crew of 22 firefighters from the Service de sécurité incendie de Laval contained the flames, which were concentrated in the roof space. Losses are pegged at $60,000 for the building and $5,000 for personal property. Three occupants required relocation, and investigators suspect an electrical or mechanical fault.

Rocket surge to division lead on Mittelstadt heroics

The Laval Rocket swept both their away fixtures this weekend, including an astonishing rally from four goals down against the Belleville Senators. Defenceman Luke Mittelstadt potted the overtime winner to continue his blistering start, racking up 13 points through six contests to lead all AHL scorers.

Community note

The loss of soldiers at Wainwright brings home the personal realities behind military service. A touching tribute from one young soldier’s former rugby coach, who remembered him simply as “everybody’s friend,” captures the warmth and fellowship shared among those who serve.

Wrapping up
