Top story

Historic Conservative wave sweeps British Columbia

The Conservative Party of British Columbia will form the province’s next government after a decisive victory that ends years of NDP rule. Party leader Lorne Doerkson becomes the first Conservative leader to secure a majority government in British Columbia in nearly a century.

The result marks the culmination of a remarkable comeback for a party that was considered a political afterthought only a few years ago. In a matter of weeks, Doerkson went from being a relatively little-known MLA to premier-designate.

The Conservatives captured a number of key ridings across the province, including areas in Surrey and along the North Shore, building a strong lead early on election night.

The defeat is particularly bitter for David Eby. The NDP leader called an early election in hopes of securing a stronger mandate, but the gamble backfired. Although he retained his own seat, he announced that he would step down as party leader.

The incoming government says it will focus on economic growth, reducing the tax burden and accelerating major development projects across the province.

In detail

Four more nights of closures planned on Highway 440 in Laval

Road repair work will require several overnight closures on Highway 440 near Highway 15 from October 26 to 29.

The work will affect both eastbound and westbound service roads, as well as several connecting ramps leading to and from Highways 15 and 440. Clearly marked detours will be in place throughout the project.

Drivers who regularly use the interchange should allow extra travel time during closure periods.

The schedule may be adjusted if weather conditions or operational constraints affect the work.

Suspicious fire destroys Laval single-family home

A home on Saint-Judes Street in Chomedey was completely destroyed by a major fire early Friday morning.

When firefighters arrived, the building was already fully engulfed. All occupants had safely evacuated without injury thanks to a working smoke alarm.

Despite the efforts of approximately 30 firefighters, the two-storey residence has been declared a total loss. Damage is estimated at more than $750,000, and four people have been temporarily displaced.

Because the fire has been deemed suspicious, the case has been transferred to the Laval Police Service for further investigation.

MAPEI Canada donates 99 bicycles to youth in need

More than 50 volunteers gathered in Laval to assemble and donate 99 bicycles to youth from across Greater Montreal as part of MAPEI Canada’s annual “Build to Give” initiative.

The project unfolded in two stages: a bicycle assembly day followed by the official distribution of the bikes. In addition to receiving a bicycle, participants took part in cycling clinics and road safety workshops.

Representatives from Cycling Canada, Espoirs Laval and the Montreal Police Service participated in the event, which aims to encourage active transportation and greater access to sport.

Launched in 2024, the initiative continues to grow each year, helping more young people discover the benefits of cycling.

Coup de Coeur

Our pick today goes to the community effort behind MAPEI Canada’s initiative. Volunteers, sports organizations and community partners came together to help young people gain confidence, independence and access to healthy outdoor activity through cycling.

We wish you a wonderful day. Whether it’s on two wheels, over a cup of coffee or simply during a quiet moment, take some time to slow down and enjoy the day.
