Top story

Laval hosts researchers from 25 countries to tackle future pandemics

From November 3 to 5, Laval steps onto the global stage as international specialists gather to focus on infectious diseases. The Pasteur Network, which unites 33 biomedical research and public health institutes worldwide, is staging its annual general meeting in North America for the first time.

The summit is organized in partnership with the Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS), the network’s sole official Canadian affiliate, alongside the Université de Montréal’s Faculty of Medicine as an associate member under its sponsorship.

Selecting Laval reflects the strength of local research infrastructure. Pasteur Network executive director Rebecca Grais highlighted the facilities at the Centre Armand-Frappier Santé Biotechnologie, particularly its level-3 biosafety containment laboratories, which enable safe study of high-risk emerging pathogens.

Discussions throughout the summit will center on how emerging tools, including artificial intelligence, can help detect, prevent, and mitigate future global health threats.

In detail

Five-alarm fire mobilizes crews in Montreal’s South-West

Emergency crews responded Sunday afternoon to a fire on the roof of a four-storey residential building close to the intersection of Sainte-Cunégonde and Lévis streets. The response was escalated to a fifth alarm shortly after 4 p.m.

Officials urged the public to steer clear of the neighbourhood, warning of possible electrical outages in surrounding homes. The cause of the blaze and the full extent of the damage remain under review.

Missing senior’s body recovered from Rivière des Prairies

On Sunday morning around 10 a.m., SPVM officers recovered the body of 72-year-old Leonne Aneus from the Rivière des Prairies. She had been reported missing the previous weekend.

Authorities stated the incident is not being investigated as a criminal matter, following reports suggesting she entered the water on her own.

Six federal by-elections called for December 7

Prime Minister Mark Carney has scheduled by-elections across six vacant ridings in Quebec, Ontario, and Saskatchewan, filling empty seats in the House of Commons before the end of the year.

Carney and Trump hold discussions on Canada-U.S. trade

The Prime Minister described talks with the U.S. President as a positive step toward securing a mutually beneficial cross-border trade agreement. Negotiating teams from both nations plan to continue discussions over the coming weeks, following months of tariff friction.

Local highlight

The memorial unveiled in Saint-Léonard for Giuseppe Di Gioacchino, an 89-year-old pedestrian fatally struck last May, serves as a sobering reminder of street safety. It underscores the urgent need to design roadways that safeguard all residents, particularly our seniors.
