Top story
A 200-metre excavation snarls traffic near Place Bell
Drivers travelling along Rue Claude-Gagné between Boulevard Le Corbusier and Rue Lucien-Paiement have faced major detours since September 28. Crews have dug up a 200-metre trench to overhaul the street’s linear drainage channels and improve rainwater runoff capacity.
The municipal project has completely shut down westbound traffic, restricting vehicle flow to a single eastbound lane. City spokesperson Jonathan Lévesque noted that crews are targeting a full reopening by Friday, November 13, depending on weather and on-site operational progress.
SAHO Construction secured the contract in July with a bid of $662,724. In the meantime, motorists travelling through downtown Laval should plan for extra travel time and use alternate routes.
In detail
Heavy fire displaces five residents in Chomedey
Emergency crews responded to a serious structure fire early Wednesday morning, October 28, at an Avenue Dunn triplex located just north of Boulevard Samson in Chomedey. Laval firefighters arrived on scene eight minutes after the initial 3:33 a.m. 911 call to find flames engulfing one apartment and spreading into the adjacent units.
An aggressive offensive response brought the fire under control by 5:01 a.m. None of the five displaced tenants were injured, though all require temporary housing. Fire investigators with the Service de sécurité incendie de Laval estimate damages at $200,000 for the building and $50,000 for lost contents, pointing to an electrical fault as the probable cause.
Bank of Canada hikes key interest rate: what it means for you
The Bank of Canada pushed its benchmark interest rate up by 25 basis points to 2.5%, marking the first policy rate increase since July 2023. Prompted by ongoing inflation pressures, the move will ripple through household balance sheets across the country.
Borrowers with variable-rate mortgages and home equity lines of credit will see their monthly carrying costs climb almost immediately, while fixed-rate holders remain insulated until renewal. On the flip side, deposit accounts and guaranteed investment certificates should see slightly higher interest yields. Financial planners advise reviewing personal debt loads and avoiding impulsive portfolio changes in response to the shift.
Brewers capture first World Series title in franchise history
The Milwaukee Brewers clinched their first-ever World Series championship Wednesday night, defeating the Tampa Bay Rays 4-1 in Game 5. Young hurler Jacob Misiorowski delivered 5 2/3 scoreless innings, while rookie Cooper Pratt powered the offence with two hits and two runs batted in.
The triumph ends a long wait for Milwaukee, whose only previous Fall Classic appearance came in 1982. The historic win unfolds against a backdrop of league labour discussions, with team owners pushing for a salary cap ahead of a potential 2027 work stoppage.
Community spotlight
Seeing 30 local volunteers take time to plant 150 native species in Fabreville’s Bois de la Source is a great reminder of how local greening efforts happen from the ground up. Small, hands-on community projects like this create lasting benefits for Laval’s natural canopy.
Wrapping up
We hope your commute runs smoothly today despite the ongoing roadwork. Keep an eye on your finances following the central bank’s announcement, watch for teal pumpkins this week, and we will see you back here tomorrow morning! ☕
